Considering Art : Considering Transience
Working with egg tempera and oil
Minami Kobayashi
captures transitory moments and transient people. Depicting figures as permeable outlines of their character, subjects, and environment seem never to reach stasis. Her work combines intimacy and mystery through depictions of everyday people, animals, and places - evoking a surreal and ever so slightly off-kilter aesthetic. Kobayashi explains, 'This is an idea from Buddhism, Shogyo-Mujo, which means "all things must pass." My work invites the audience to experience gazing and rediscover the joy of patiently looking at something. In my paintings, the images reveal more with time. Feminism has increasingly worked itself into my paintings through discourse, and I hope it becomes another subtle revelation to viewers.'
