Considering Art : Considering Becoming
David Lock's
paintings explore masculinities in the process of becoming. The images utilize a collagist approach. In creating his 'Misfit' paintings, David makes collages pulled from advertisements and imagery lifted from magazines and the internet. In their making, the collages and subsequent paintings have a performative quality. In this regard, the artist seeks to undermine the source material, disrupting its meaning to create a 'new experimental man', one akin to 'Frankenstein's monster'.
