lan Mwesiga's intimate scenes of daily life pay close attention to the ways in which people navigate physical and psychological environments. Informed by Renaissance paintings and architecture, Mwesiga uses classical devices, such as proportion and composition, to alter our perception of the physical world. Depicting everyday scenes of solitude, relaxation and community, his paintings speak to the generational concerns of Africa's youth as they embark on a common search for personal and collective meaning. Set against the backdrops of urban and rural life in his home country of Uganda, his work proposes an imagined topography where historical references to Africa's era of political independence meet the daily scenes of modern life.
