The work of Alice Guy-Blaché remains largely unknown even within filmmaking communities due to an historical and indeed contemporary tendency for women and their contributions to the practice of film to be completely written out of history. And yet, not only was Blaché the first female filmmaker (having complete control of her films) but also the first filmmaker to depict a story on film.
